Sam
CRM Research Assistant

I joined Carnivore Research Malawi in May 2021 as a research assistant for 10 months. With a background in Zoology, I was excited to get involved with the conservation work that CRM was involved with.

After a few weeks settling in Kuti Wildlife Reserve, I moved to the camp in Lilongwe at Barefoot Lodge and safaris. Here me and the team started the process of trying to collar the urban hyaenas that lived around the city. After a few nights trying to attract the hyaenas in, it was truly amazing to see them appear, whooping and calling away. In all, we caught 6 hyaena for radio collaring or removing snares. Being close to these amazing predators was a real privilege, and I hope that I will be able to come out to Malawi again to see the clan.

Outside of work, I was able to do a road trip across Malawi, seeing some of the beautiful national parks and scenery that this amazing country has to offer. I would recommend CRM to anyone with an interest in conservation, and I myself hope to return again someday.
